Booming home decoration market in Japan

A surge in DIY home renovation and interior decoration

During the pandemic, people have changed their lifestyles. Consequently, they invested their free time and money on home improvement as their home time increased. Alongside online and printed media for affluent city dwellers, YouTube tutorials and Instagram pushing the trend, there is a surge in DIY home renovation and interior decoration. 

JapanConsuming reported the home interiors and furniture market expanded 6.1% in FY2020 according to new research from Teikoku Databank, reaching a record ¥1.5 trillion. As reported before, the home decoration market has been growing consistently since around 2007 and since 2011 alone has increased almost 50% in value according to Teikoku Databank.

Polarising in the home decoration market in Japan

While the home decoration market in Japan is growing steadily, most analysts agree that there will be more extreme polarisation. JapanConsuming expects to see a 2-part market:  a homogenous and functional mass market at one end and a more creative niche at the other. This niche is already emerging as witnessed by the growth of D2C furniture and home decoration brands selling online and through pop-up stores. There are also more online-only furniture retailers such as low-ya.com and flymee.jp.
